FAQs

Electives

How are electives chosen?

The junior high teachers meet with specialists and discuss our strengths and interests. We discuss which of our talents would be beneficial to share with students and create a list.

How will electives work this year?

Junior high teachers and specialists will each teach one elective per semester. Students will take electives for two days. They will have PE once per week and computer once per week. The fifth day will be either a study hall or be used for clubs (more information on that will be coming).

How are students placed in electives?

The 8th graders are placed first. They are placed in an elective and then in computer and PE. 7th graders are placed after that. Though we do our best to place students in the elective of their choice, sometimes schedules don’t work or an elective fills up and students are placed in a 3rd or even 4th choice.

What electives will be offered for Fall 2022?

Behind the Scenes

Come be part of the crew of "Singin’ in the Rain Jr.!" Charm, sparkles, glitter, lights, feathers, you name it! Together we will create Tinseltown (Hollywood) in the 1920’s as we witness silent movies go to sound but not without drama! Behind the Scenes will create and organize props, costumes, scenery, etc. for the performance. The night of the concert you will also be "behind the scenes" making sure everything goes as smoothly as possible. It is mandatory that you are at the night performance Tuesday, May 9, along with a small handful of after school rehearsals as the performance gets closer. It will be a glamorous time! (Mrs. Krinke)

Spring Musical

Lights, cameras, action!  Come join the fun as we travel back to Hollywood in the 1920’s - the time of the last silent movies. Don and Lina have been the stars but with Lina’s whiny voice will she be cast in "talking movies?" Or does the talented Kathy have to do the talking and singing for her? You must have auditioned the end of December to be considered for this musical. It is mandatory that you are all at the night performance Tuesday, May 9, along with a small handful of after school rehearsals as the performance gets closer. It will be a glamorous time! (Mrs. Krinke)

Yearbook

Students will learn the basics of journalism and create a yearbook that their classmates can keep as a memento of their time at St. Joseph. (Miss Cunningham)

Quiz Bowl

Students will learn a range of academic information on a variety of topics leading up to a quiz bowl competition. (Mr. Koperski)

Speech Team

Do you have something to say? Do you enjoy being in front of a crowd? Students will learn the basics of speech preparation and presentation. We will cover both public address and interpretation.

Strategic Game Play

Students will spend time in class playing different board games and will discuss how to use strategy in those board games. We will also create our own board games to share with elementary students and the students in our class.

Passport: Latin America

Be immersed in the Spanish language while exploring Latin American countries. We will learn beginning Spanish through culture, literature, and language immersion. Take a step towards becoming a global citizen! (Mrs. Munoz)

Military History

class we learn about World War II and the Vietnam War. We will study the causes of war, military strategy and weaponry, study pictures and firsthand accounts of war, and watch lots of interesting videos. This is a great class for all the history buffs out there!

Creative Writing

In this spring elective, you will see different ways you can write and express yourself. After seeing different types of writing, you will choose which style appeals to you and have time to work on it and produce a written work you can be proud of.

Teacher's Aid

For this elective you will be paired with a teacher in grades K-8. Your assigned teacher will give you tasks to complete during your elective. You may be asked to work with students, check papers, or perform other classroom tasks.

How are electives graded?

Students receive a letter grade for electives, but these grades do not count toward their GPA.
